A diesel fuel heater system for heating fuel for the engine of a vehicle is described comprising: a heat exchanger having an inner wall and an elongated heat exchanger element mounted in heat exchanger, a fuel outlet line leading from valve to the exterior of element of heat exchanger to the space between the inner wall of heat exchanger and element, heat exchanger having an outlet to the interior of said element fluidly coupled to the inlet of a water pump; and valve including a main body portion having fuel outlet coupled to vapor separator, main body portion further including both fuel inlet line and fuel outlet line to the space between the inner wall of heat exchanger and element, last mentioned fuel outlet line and last mentioned fuel inlet being in fluid communication with a distribution chamber in main body portion; a mixing chamber having an inner wall disposed in main body portion in fluid communication with both last mentioned fuel outlet, temperature sensing means associated with mixing chamber for sensing the temperature of fuel flowing there through, port fluidly coupled to vapor separator opening into mixing chamber; opening restrictor means coupled to temperature sensing means associated with last mentioned port for restricting the degree of opening thereof, mixing chamber being separated from distribution chamber by an inner partition wall in main body portion, a spring biased valve coupled to restrictor means mounted in mixing chamber having a valve shaft extending through a second opening in partition wall, a spring surrounding valve between valve and the inner wall of mixing chamber; with the flow of fuel out of valve fuel outlet gradually being reduced with less hot fuel entering mixing chamber, hot fuel also continuing to flow into mixing chamber through valve port, temperature sensing means subsequently stabilizing at a predetermined temperature with spring of valve moving valve away from opening through partition wall.
