This paper delineates replacing obsolescent 500-kV series-capacitor banks with metal-oxide-protected higher-current-rated capacitor banks. The new banks are the largest metal-oxide-protected capacitor banks in operation in the world. The method for selecting the metal-oxide-varistor rating is described and the system component designs - including a unique seismic-design platform - are presented along with definitive fault testing and operational data.
