This patent describes a metal-halogen energy storage device, comprising: an electro-chemical cell, the cell having a microporous separator, the cell having a temperature of from about 0/sup 0/C to about 100/sup 0/C; a positive electrode and a negative electrode located in the cell, the microporous separator separating the positive electrode and the negative electrode and forming a chamber for each electrode; a negative fluid, the negative fluid located in the negative electrode chamber, the negative fluid having ions therein selected from the group consisting of tin, titanium, vanadium, and chrome; and a positive fluid, the positive fluid located in the positive electrode chamber, the positive fluid having a halogen gas and halogen ions therein.
