A well-pipe pulling device with an upright support holds a vertical movable yoke unit which grips the pipe when it moves upward on the support. A hydraulic cylinder and piston move the vertical movable unit upward and downward on the support. A hydraulically operated brake unit grips the pipe to prevent downward movement when the elevator moves downward on the support, and releases the pipe when the elevator moves upward on the support. A valve, located at each end of the hydraulic cylinders, is connected to a hydraulic power source so that fluid under pressure can be selectively directed to one end or the other of the hydraulic cylinders.
