Coal-seam gas: a hazard that's also a resource

The National Petroleum Council, which estimates in-place coalbed-gas resources at 398 trillion CF, predicts that the US could be collecting 600 billion CF/yr of coal-seam gas by 1990 and 2.4 TCF/yr by 2000. That assumes a high level of development with a 10% rate of return and a price of $9/million Btu. Methane makes up about 7% of the Btu value of a coal seam and is found in quantities of 200-500 CF/ton of coal. In 1982, Southern Natural Gas Co. will buy 1 billion CF of coal gas from two mining companies in its area. Other projects include a commercial project by the American Public Gas Association to produce 150,000 CF/day from each of two production sites - one in Alabama and one in Colorado - to demonstrate the viability of coal-gas wells that are independent of mining operations.
