Dynamical studies of dendritic growth

Journal Article · · Acta Metall.; (United States)
Directional solidification studies are carried out in succinonitrile-acetone system to investigate the stability of dendritic interfaces. Time dependent changes in the interface pattern are examine as the externally imposed velocity is suddenly altered. A hysteresis effect is observed in the interface restabilization process, and the different mechanisms which operate during the increase and decrease in velocity are discussed to understand the hysteresis effect. It is found that in all cases the mechanism which selects the constant, steady-state, dendrite tip radius is quite sharp, and the dendrite tip alway restabilizes to the value which is just marginally stable. The selection process for the constant primary spacing, however, is found not to be very sharp.
