An analysis was made to assess the potential environmental, social, and economic impacts of the proposed cluster of power plants in the Ohio River Basin (ORBES). In the area of air quality, the study was focused on the regional effects of changes in pollutant emissions (sulfur dioxide, particulates and nitrogen oxides). The results show a dramatic effect of coal-fixedplants, that sulfur dioxide emissions would be lower in the year 2000 than in 1976, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve both electrical energy growth and improved air quality. 4 refs.
