Stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of CDA 443 admiralty brass was studied in sodium sulfate solutions over a pH range of 1.3 to 12.7 at open circuit and controlled potentials using a slow strain rate technique. This study negates the view that SCC of brass only occurs in the presence of ammonia or its derivatives. SCC of brass occurs over a wide pH range depending on the oxidizing condition represented by the anodic potential. (FS)
