Magnetic correlations near the critical concentration for ferromagnetism

The onset of ferromagnetism in Fe Cr alloys and amorphous Fe Mn alloys has been studied using neutron small angle scattering. The technique allows the magnetic phase boundaries to be delineated and reveals the evolution of the magnetic correlations as a function of temperature and concentration. The data for Fe Cr are consistent with behavior expected at a percolation multicritical point. The amorphous Fe Mn alloys undergo a transition from ferromagnetism to a spin glass phase with a re-entrant phase boundary. In both systems the correlation lengths fail to diverge at the ferromagnetic critical temperatures.
