Title: Hydraulic brake booster with tubular conduit return spring

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6487485

This patent describes a hydraulic power brake booster having a housing, a bore formed in the housing and having a bore well, a power piston reciprocably received in the bore and having a dynamic seal reciprocably sealing between the power piston and the bore well, a power chamber in the bore defined in part by one side of the power piston, a brake fluid reservoir, control valve means in the housing adapted to control hydraulic booster actuating pressure to the power piston, a pump operatively receiving hydraulic fluid from the reservoir and operatively providing hydraulic fluid under pressure to the power chamber under control of the valve means, and connection means for connecting the booster to operatively pressurize at least one of a plurality of brake circuits. The improvement consists of: an annular conduit retainer mounted in the bore on the opposite side of the power piston from the power chamber and forming with the bore wall a first annular chamber about the retainer, first and second retainer seals respectively located on axially opposite sides of the first annular chamber and sealing between the retainer and the bore wall; the power piston having an extension extending axially through the annular conduit retainer and in reciprocable sealing relation therewith to define between the power piston and the annular conduit retainer a reservoir pressure chamber continuously fluid connected to the reservoir, the power piston extension also providing a booster output member; the power piston further having a recess therein defined by a side wall with a control valve reciprocably received therein the forming a part of the control valve means, a second annular chamber formed about the control valve with the side wall of the recess.
