Electric power generation from wood waste: a case study

Conference · · ACS Symp. Ser.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6487435
A general overview of the requirements necessary to implement a wood residue energy program is presented in this article. A case study of an actual 50 megawatt (MW) wood-fired electric generating plant in Burlington, Vermont, will be presented as a model. Each component necessary to make up the entire wood energy system will be discussed in sufficient detail to assist the reader in understanding the requirements necessary to evaluate any wood energy program, be it thermal, steam, or electric generation. The experience of the Burlington project is based on the results of a conceptual engineering study conducted by Hennington, Durham and Richardson, Inc. The availability of wood residue and supply, its energy characteristics, harvesting methodology, transportation and handling, combustion equipment, institutional and environmental concerns, and economic considerations are discussed.
