Within the Balcones Fault Zone there are a number of Mafic igneous bodies of Cretaceous age. The Balcones Fault Zone and associated igneous rocks can be divided into 2 parallel portions. The updip or northern portion is exposed at the surface, and the downdip or southern portion is covered by Tertiary sedimentary rocks of the Gulf Coastal Plain. There are more than 40 different fields in 10 counties producing oil and gas from these igneous bodies and related rocks. They range in depth from 500 to 3800 ft. A considerable number of buried serpentine plugs are known to produce hydrocarbons either directly from the igneous rock or from sands draped over the igneous body or from porous limestone developed on the crest and flanks of the igneous body. These fields occur in 2 distinct areas. One is centered near Austin at the northeastern end of the Balcones Fault Zone. The second area is centered near Crystal City in Zavala County at the southwestern end of the Balconies Fault Zone.
