Core drilling in the Holman Ranch Field, NW. Edwards Co., South Texas, confirmed the existence of substantial quantities of 15$ crude oil at a depth of about 550 ft. Following the coring, a program was initiated to determine the effect of steam injection as a means of stimulating production. The general geology of the area is shown by a structure map drawn on the top of the Glen Rose Formation. A pilot project was drilled utilizing an inverted 5-spot pattern on 2.5-acre spacing. The initial steam generator used on the project was an 11,600,000 btu, 1,500 psi unit with dual water softeners. The steam generator was connected to the tubing in the injection well with flexible joints to allow for expansion of the tubing in the casing. Results of the initial tests were encouraging enough to warrant further work. Additional wells on wider spacing are planned and individual wells will be ''huffed and puffed'' to improve performance. New drilling techniques have considerably reduced costs. Other techniques are applicable to secondary recovery in the Holman Ranch Field, particularly in situ combustion and polymer flooding. In view of the apparent large areal extent of the reservoir, these techniques will undoubtedly be tried in the future.
