Activated Mo(CO)/sub 6/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ can be considered as the first catalyst to have been investigated of the class of organometallic complexes deposited upon oxide supports. The constitution of activated Mo(CO)/sub 6//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ and its catalytic activity depend upon the following parameters: (1) the degree of dehydroxylation of the alumina: fully hydroxylated (HA), partially dehydroxylated (PDA, dehydroxylation in flowing He at 475/sup 0/C), and nearly fully dehydroxylated (DA, dehydroxylated at 950/sup 0/C); (2) the temperature of pretreatment; and (3) the flowing gas during pretreatment. Catalytic activities of activated Mo(CO)/sub 6/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ are described for the following reactions: metathesis of propene; isomerization of butene; hydrogenation of propylene; hydrogenolysis of cyclopropane; isotopic exchange between deuterium and cyclopentane; and hydrogenolysis of alkanes.
