A heat exchange apparatus is described comprising: a generally cylindrical tank defining a longitudinal axis and having a first port and a second port for entry and exit of a first fluid; an annular tube bundle disposed within the tank, the annular tube bundle comprising elongated metal tubes. The annular tube bundle defines a longitudinal axis substantially parallel to that of the tank and offset therefrom, and has a generally cylindrical interior communicating with the first port so as to define an axial inside plenum for the first fluid; the second port being located on the tank substantially diametrically opposite the axis of the annular tube bundle whereby an eccentric outside plenum is defined within the tank outside of the annular tube bundle and communicating with the second port; means for effecting flow of the first fluid into one of the plenums and thence over the tube bundle into the other plenum; and means for effecting flow of a second fluid through the interiors of the tubes to effect heat transfer between the first fluid and the second fluid.
