A process for consolidating incompetent subsurface formations consists of positioning a container or capsule holding solid rocket propellant in the borehole at a location having access to the incompetent formation. An inert fluid is displaced down the well and into the formation and the rocket propellant is then ignited. The propellant burns to liberate hot gaseous combustion products. Pressure is maintained on the well to force the hot combustion products into the formation with the inert fluid. Displacement of the inert fluid is continued in the well at a rate to maintain the temperature of the combustion products and inert fluid displace into the formation between 500 to 1100/sup 0/F.
