A combination tool and valve is described. The valve has an elongated stem with a free end, first and second grooves are about the valve stem near the free end. The tool is designed to mount the valve in an internal combustion engine block including an annular spring retainer extending about the valve stem near the free end thereof with a body portion having a tapered interior surface surrounding the valve stem and an annular flange. A compression spring surrounds the valve stem and abuts the engine block and the spring retainer flange. A segmental keeper, the segments of which are located within the spring retainer body portion. Each of the keeper segments has a tapered exterior surface engaging the tapered interior surface of the spring retainer with a wedging action and an interior surface with a lug designed to be engaged in the first groove in the valve stem portion near the free end thereof.
