Determination of polychlorinated biphenyls in waste and lubricating oils

A number of procedures have been developed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) analysis in waste and/or lubricating oils. These procedures, however, all suffer from the inability to adequately remove analytical interferences from typical waste oil samples. Most are time consuming due to the many manual operations required for sample cleanup, and all employ low resolution chromatographic procedures which can make quantitative identifications difficult. In this paper a method is reported which overcomes these deficiencies. This method first employs preparative scale high performance liquid chromatography to remove analytical interferences, and glass capillary gas chromatography to identify and quantitate any PCB contaminants in the samples analyzed.
