Title: Long-term outlook for LNG trade and regulation in the Unites States

Journal Article · · Energy Law J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6484164

Most of the world's natural gas resources can be made available to major markets only by the transportation of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Passage of the Natural Gas Policy Act of 1978 (NGPA), which improved the domestic gas supply outlook, will not favor LNG imports in the short term, but the prospects for future increases are enhanced by the three major LNG receiving terminals already in place, the proven safety record of LNG transport, and the gradual decontrol of US gas wellhead prices. To achieve increased imports, will require: terms of sale that ensure long-term prices at marketable levels; continued US deregulation; new technology and marketing initiatives by the gas industry; the removal of marketing constraints; improved regulations; and assurances to investors that trade terms and market flexibility will be honored. 102 references.
