The automobile transportation system's impact is examined on three dimensions on the urban environment: spatial characteristics and design, the physical environment, and the use of natural resources. If low density sprawl continues, the price of urban development will be nearly double what it would cost compared with high density planned development. Consideration of mass transit systems forces examination of alternatives on all sectors of the city before decisions are made.
