The interaction of saturated hydrocarbon molecules with Group VIII transition metals is of considerable interest due to the connection with hydrogenolysis catalysis. In order to understand better the elementary steps involved in the interaction of saturated hydrocarbon molecules with well characterized surfaces of transition metals, the authors have recently considered the adsorption of cyclopropane on Ru(001), the adsorption and dehydrogenation of cyclohexane on Ru(001), the adsorption and dehydrogenation of cyclopropane on Ir(110), and the adsorption and dehydrogenation of ethane, propane, isobutane and neopentane on Ir(110). The relative lack of reactivity of this class of molecules has prevented heretofore the study of their reactive chemisorption on well characterized surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. However, the (1x2) reconstructed Ir(110) surface has been found to be sufficiently active to chemisorb dissociatively all saturated hydrocarbon molecules investigated with the exception of methane at surface temperatures below 130/sup 0/K. This discovery has allowed a characterization of this important elementary step in the overall hydrogenolysis reaction for the first time under well characterized conditions.
