Surface mining of non-coal minerals. Appendix II: mining and processing of oil shale and tar sands

This paper provides brief comments on the relation of oil shale mining and processing to P.L. 95-87 Act's environmental provisions. The relation of oil shale and tar sands deposits to land, water, air, and biological resources is discussed. Current and developing technology are described. Oil shale in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming is discussed, but tar sands discussed were deposited in Utah. (DP)
