This paper describes the Ammonia from Coal Project of the Tennessee Valley Authority, U.S.A. A 200-ton per day coal gasification and gas purification facility has been added to an existing natural gas-steam reforming ammonia plant at the National Fertilizer Development Center, Muscle Shoals, Alabama, USA. The preparation and processing of the coal and the operation of the plant are described with the aid of block diagrams.
