Adoption of a new phenol removal scrubber at the Makeevka coke works

In the process of operation of steam units for removal of phenols from the tar liquors the problem arose of the feasibility of packing in the phenolate part of the phenol removal scrubbers: metal spiral packing is subject to intense corrosion and overcompaction, and coke packing became severely clogged with deposits of carbonates and sulfates. This led to a sharp increase of the resistance and to forced shutdown of the phenol removal scrubber for replacement of the packing. Packing replacement operations are very laborious and expensive. In addition, experience shows that a decrease in the quantity of packing in the phenolate part (as compared to the specifications of the project) had little effect on the degree of extraction of phenols. This provided an incentive for a number of coking plants to conduct experiments on phenol removal from the tar liquor with full removal of the packing from the phenolate part of the scrubbers. As a result, it was shown that the absence of packing may be compensated by an increase in the density of irrigation of the circulating phenolates. On this basis, a phenol removal scrubber without packing in the phenolate part was constructed and commissioned at the Makeeva Coke Works. The design and operation of this scrubber is discussed.
