Fluorocarbon combustion studies. VI. Competitive combustion reactions of fluorocarbons burning with fluorine

Journal Article · · Combust. Flame; (United States)
Rich mixtures of the three fuels perfluoroethane, perfluoropropane, and perfluorocyclobutane have been burned with fluorine singly, in pairs, and all together. Starting with stoichiometric mixtures, the fluorine concentration was reduced until the mixtures would no longer burn. Reaction products were analyzed chromatographically. In sharp contrast with the behavior of hydrocarbons, there were great differences in the proclivities of the fluorocarbons to react in flames. Perfluorethane can pass unreacted through a perfluoropropane or a perfluorocyclobutane flame. Perfluoropropane can pass unreacted through a perfluorocyclobutane flame.
