A typical flow scheme for a cryogenic plant to extract ethane and heavier hydrocarbons from gas is illustrated and described. Correlations are included for estimating (1) composition of residue gas at demethanizer top temperature from which recovery may be calculated by material balance, and (2) minimum operable process temperature and CO/sub 2/ present in process gas. Methods are shown for shortcut calculation of ethane recovery and the temperature drop across an expander. Examples are included to illustrate the effect on recovery of pressure change in a demethanizer and required pressure-temperature change for increasing ethane recovery to a particular value.
