Production pathways for H/sup +/ following multiphoton excitation of H/sub 2/ are explored by using the E,F excited electronic state as a two-photon-resonant intermediate level. In one-laser experiments H/sup +/ is formed by dissociation of the neutral molecule rather than by dissociation of the H/sub 2//sup +/ ion. By use of time-delayed double-resonance laser ionization, three distinct processes for H/sup +/ formation are identified. In each case the observed threshold for dissociation from the chosen resonant level lies surprisingly close to an asymptotic (R/sub H(1s)+H*/ ..-->.. infinity) limit.
