Arizona Public Service Co. (APS) underwent a reorganization after surviving a hostile takeover, potential bankruptcy of the holding company, long outages, etc. APS basically reinvented itself. Every department was studied, and at the end there were 1100 fewer positions. Every employee then had to reapply for their job, to make sure people were the best for the job and that they fit into the organization. For the remaining employees, morale needed to be maintained by making them more certain of their future. This was accomplished by a vision statement to become one of the top five electric utilities, and then implementing a training program to make that vision possible and include everyone in the process. APS has now improved its performance, cut costs, and bettered its public image.
