Title: 1 - evaluation of threaded fasteners, October-December 1973

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6478282

The objective of this program is to select an anti-galling treatment for each of the fastener material combinations to be used in FFTF sodium components. The anti-galling treatment selected must: (1) allow disassembly of mechanically fastened assemblies by preventing seizure, galling, scoring, or self-welding after long-term sodium exposure, and (2) not adversely affect the structural integrity of the internal or external threads. Disassembly, sodium removal, and visual examination were completed on 30-bolt test specimens after a 30-day soak in flowing 1100/sup 0/F sodium. Disassembly was performed in a glove box, and sodium was removed using the Dowanol process. Also included in a program to devise, develop, test, and evaluate techniques for sodium removal and storage of test specimens and components, and to expand and refine, by test and analysis, the sodium removal and storage techniques and procedures for use in processing typical LMFBR components. The AI program in FY 1974 has concentrated on three major tasks: (1) sodium removal and storage, (2) bag handling, and (3) sodium removal process development.
