The calorimetric heat of the capillary condensation of pentane in silica gel mesopores with mean pore diameter of about 20 nm is 0.7RT less than the isosteric heat and virtually the same as the value calculated by a thermodynamic method relative to a single adsorption isotherm. In the region of the completion of adsorption (as for other uniformly porous silica gels with small pore size), extrema are observed in the dependence of the differential heats on occupancy. The differential entropy of pentane upon capillary condensation in silica gel pores with mean diameter about 20 nm is only about 2 J/mole x /sup 0/K less than the entropy of the normal liquid, i.e., the state of this adsorbate is virtually indistinguishable from that of liquid pentane.
