The total convection loss from the absorber panels of a 5MW /SUB t/ cavity receiver were measured experimentally and found to be 1.43 percent of the total heat input. Since the measured convection loss from the tests, which were influenced both by forced and free convection, is essentially equal to the loss predicted by Seiber's correlation, which accounts for free convection only, it is apparent that a cavity geometry reduces receiver convection losses significantly.
