Mechanism of byproduct formation in oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene to styrene on magnesium ferrite-containing catalyst (in Russian)
In the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene (EB) to styrene on magnesium ferrite-containing catalysts, the principal byproducts are benzene and toluene, the total content of which amounts to 6% by weight under optimal conditions. At the same time, a small quantity of CO/sub 2/ appears in the contact gas as a product of exhaustive oxidation of the aromatic hydrocarbons. It was established by means of the kinetic isotope method (KIM) that, on KS-4 catalyst, benzene and toluene are formed both from the original EB and from the styrene end-product, whereas the sole predecessor of the CO/sub 2/ that is formed is the styrene. In connection with the search for means of improving the selectivity of dehydrogenation of EB to styrene on magnesium ferrite-containing catalysts, the authors have investigated the mechanism of formation of these byproducts, using ethylbenzene and styrene labeled with /sup 14/C.
