Environmental screening for siting the superconducting super collider in Illinois

Conference · · Geol. Soc. Am., Abstr. Programs; (United States)
OSTI ID:6476128
The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) is a proposed accelerator that will be 100 or 160 kilometers in circumference, through which superconducting magnets will accelerate subatomic particles to an energy level up to 20 trillion electron volts (TeV). Currently the world's largest accelerator is the 5 kilometer, 1 TeV ring at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. The existing accelerator could be used as an injector for the SSC; therefore, an environmental suitability study is being conducted to evaluate an area of 36 townships west of Fermilab for construction of the SSC. The Illinois State geological, Natural History, and Water Surveys, and the Illinois State Museum have compiled 50 sets of data which are displayed as maps. These concern issues such as urban areas, geologic materials, archaeological sites, natural areas, aquifers, etc. A computer-based Geographic Information System is being used to develop a model to aid in the assessment of environmental suitability. In modeling, each type of data is weighted based on the relative environmental consequence of locating facilities within specific settings. Weights on each map are added to produce a map showing cumulative scores for each area. For example, a map of aquifers can be overlain on an urban map. Successive maps could then be overlain to produce a map that shows the sums of the weights from each map. Finally, the facility design if overlain on the suitability map and manipulated to obtain the optimal siting configuration.
