Optimization of superconducting solenoid coil

This paper describes the differences between superconducting solenoid coil and normal solenoid coil in optimization of coil design. For the normal solenoid coil only the geometrical parameters are taken into account, but for the superconducting solenoid coil the effect of the magnetic field to the current-bearing capability of a superconductor must be considered. In this paper the principle of the optimization of coil design and the mathematical model for searching the optimum parameters of coil for a superconducting solenoid coil are given. Through a computation of a practical example some views are shown as follows: Firstly, the optimum design obtained by using the mathematical model for optimization of superconducting solenoid coil is much more economical than that obtained by using the mathematical model for optimization of normal solenoid coil; Secondly, if the requirement of the necessary initial design parameters (for example, the inner diameter of coil and its central magnetic field) and the critical characteristic of superconductor are given, then the optimum design for a superconducting solenoid coil will completely and solely fixed.
