Energy: from opulence to sufficiency

Book ·
OSTI ID:6473697
A non-technical review of the energy situation, this book argues that the U.S. can reduce energy consumption by using energy more efficiently and changing consuming habits. The alternative is a future of resource shortages, a polluted environment, and economic strains. A goal of reduced consumption will require new policies to make more appropriate energy investments and new attitudes on the part of the consuming public. A national policy of conservation will substitute realism for continually rising expections. Major chapter headings are: The Energy Crisis: a crisis of rising expectations; energy conversion: not all forms are equal; physical limitation: environmental and resource constraints; fossil fuels; the twentieth century energy source; more effective energy utilization: the neglected resource; nuclear energy: a Faustain bargain; alternative sources; energy for a sustainable futures; and the future: the need for a new ethic. 323 references, 70 figures, 19 tables.
