Charge exchange spectroscopy as a principal tool for fusion-plasma diagnostics relies heavily on the quality of the cross sections for the underlying charge transfer processes. The present status of charge transfer cross sections is discussed both for processes relevant for the spectroscopy of the core plasma and of the edge and/or divertor plasma. {copyright} {ital 1998 American Institute of Physics.}
