Methacoal and ethacoal

Coal suspended in methanol (methacoal) or in ethyl alcohol (ethacoal) is a new technology designed to prevent compaction in coal slurry pipelines. The technique uses the natural affinity of alcohol and coal to form a stable suspension that can be handled as a liquid fuel and is superior to coal. The developers anticipate piping ethanol from the plant to the coal mine and piping the suspension back to the distillery for separation at 10 to 20 percent more efficiency than water slurries. The process is patented, but slow peer review has delayed acceptance. An economic breakdown estimates delivered methacoal costs at $18 per barrel. (DCK)
