Alternatives to land disposal of hazardous wastes were discussed in the Tenth Annual Research Symposium on Land Disposal, Remedial Action, Incineration and Treatment of Hazardous Waste. Results are presented from incineration research which emphasize improved destruction efficiency, use of wastes as fuel, and methods of air pollution control. Biological and chemical methods reported include: use of microorganisms as organochlorine compound detoxifiers; methods that use alkalis or glycols to destroy toluene solutions of PCBs and dioxins under ambient conditions; and detoxification of electroplating waste sludges with recovery of cadmium chromium, copper, iron, nickel and zinc in ionic or elemental form.
