Consolidation of unconsolidated sands

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6470887
A process is described for consolidating an unconsolidated sandy, asphaltic, crude oil-bearing stratum without unduly reducing the permeability. In a broad aspect of the process a liquid solution of COD2U in a light hydrocarbon (for example, propane) is injected into the stratum while maintaining the solution under substantial pressure so as to prevent any appreciable release of COD2U and precipitate asphaltenes on the sand particles. After substantial precipitation has occurred, the pressure on the injected solution is suddenly released so as to free COD2U from solution and allow it to return to the well. This opens up pores and passageways through the stratum while leaving the asphalt deposited on the sand particles to consolidate them. (10 claims)
