The relationship between food production, intensity of land use and energy consumption in food production is discussed to prove that intensification of land use and high energy inputs are required to support high population densities. Tables present data on: comparison of energy for food production; energy for food distribution; this energy consumption as percentage of national energy consumption, and ratio of energy produced to energy input in 6 countries; and energy input per hectare and protein yields per hectare for different types of farming.
