A haloalkyl phosphonic acid is added to an aqueous system to prevent the formation of water-insoluble iron compounds (such as iron hydroxide, Fe (OH)D3U) in pipelines that carry large volumes of water. The primary advantage is found in the fact that this method prevents precipitation of water-insoluble iron compounds in basic and lower acidity aqueous solutions. This method also finds particular utility in the prevention of plugging of subterranean petroleum-bearing formations during the secondary recovery of oil by waterflooding. An example is included to further describe this method. (8 claims)
