One of the most widespread methodological approaches to the study of biochemical processes is the use of endogenous and exogenous compounds, into the molecules of which stable or radioactive isotopes have been introduced. The authors present a survey that generalizes the literature data showing the biochemical properties of labeled and unlabeled preparations from a comparative standpoint. The influence of stable isotopes is discussed, in particular the introduction of deuterium as a label into the structure of drug molecules which may substantially change their biotransformation. The influence of radioactive isotopes is examined, and in a study of the tissue toxicity of /sup 3/H-, /sup 14/C-, and /sup 35/S-labeled proline, serine, lysine, and methionine, it was revealed that they caused a pronounced lesion of the lungs of rat embryos in culture, among other effects.
