Evidence for an abundance gradient in the galactic disk

DDO photometry of distance field K giants and DDO and UBV photometry of 41 open clusters are used to estimate the variation of metallicity across the galactic disk. The field stars in the direction of the galactic center show little or no correlation of metallicity with distance, but the anticenter field stars show a definite decrease in metallicity with increasing distance. The clusters (ranging in distance from 8 to 14 kpc from the galactic center) also show a distinct metallicity gradient. The combined data lead to a metallicity gradient of d(Fe/H)dR=-0.05 +- 0.01 kpc/sup -1/.In a number of other studies of objects in the galactic disk, a gradient has been detected. When all of the evidence is considered together, there is a suggestion that the gradient is less steep (perhaps zero) in the inner disk and substantially steeper in the outer disk. There is, as yet, insufficient data for any statements to be made regarding the relation between stellar age and the gradient. An analysis of recent DDO photometry shows that minor modifications to the procedures for calculating interstellar reddening and absolute magnitude are necessary. In particular, recently published reddening laws have necessitated a change in the DDO reddening coefficients, and a correction factor of the form -4deltaCN+0.4 must be applied to the DDO absolute magnitudes.
