Photoelectron emission spectra measured with both He I and monochromatic Al K..cap alpha.. radiation are reported for the valence regions of ZrCl, ZrCl/sub 2/ (3R-type), Zr/sub 6/Cl/sub 12/, and ZrCl/sub 3/. The metal-rich valence band observed in all phases at 1.1-1.5 eV is found to shrink and to move away from the Fermi level on oxidation. The results are compared with the implications regarding metal-metal bonding provided by the observed distances and the bond orders calculated therefrom, especially with regard to the evident absence of a strong metal-metal interaction in ZrCl/sub 3/.
