Using the most accurate potential curves available for the athinsp[sup 3][summation][sub u][sup +] and Xthinsp[sup 1][summation][sub g][sup +] states of lithium molecules, we compute the positions of shape resonances. We also calculate the deexcitation probability from a bound level v[sup [prime]] with rotational number N[sup [prime]] to the continuum of the lower state, and conclude that a shape resonance should be measurable for the transition 2thinsp[sup 3][product][sub g][r arrow]athinsp[sup 3][summation][sub u][sup +]. Such a shape resonance has been identified from the spectra of the transition from the v[sup [prime]]=2,N[sup [prime]]=4 level of 2thinsp[sup 3][product][sub g] into the N[sup [double prime]]=4 continuum of athinsp[sup 3][summation][sub u][sup +]. Its position is in good agreement with the theoretical prediction. [copyright] [ital 1999] [ital The American Physical Society]
