Strain rate sensitivity of niobium as a function of grain size
Technical Report

The yield strength (sigma) of niobium increases with increasing strain rates. A plot of log (e) vs log sigma gives a linear relationship which suggests that sigma is related to strain rate by an equation of the following type: sigma = K (epsilon)/sup n/. The yield strength of niobium increases with decreasing grain size in such a way that the yield strength is related to the grain size and strain rate by an equation of the forms: sigma = B d/sup -c/2 (epsilon)n/. Since the small grain sizes did not show a larger increase in yield strength than predicted by the above equation, impurities are probably in the grains as well as in the boundaries and there is an equilibrium distribution between solute atoms in the matrix material and in the grain boundary.
