A method is described for measuring radiation-induced electric conductivity in ferroelectric materials; this conductivity can lead to charge leakage in ferroelectrics used in pyroelectric radiation detectors. Information about the radiation-induced conductivity is carried in the electric field generated by the polarized material under irradiation. Experiments were carried out on a PKR-7M lead zirconate-titanate piezoelectric ceramic system irradiated in a pulsed nuclear reactor. Under assumptions for ferroelectrics an equation was derived for the leakage current from radiation-induced conductivity and the electric field generated by the pyroelectric effect.
