Fretting fatigue of Ti-6A1-4V alloy
A study of the fretting fatigue process in sheet specimens of Ti-6A1-4V alloy has been carried out. In the fretting experiments two fretting pads, also of Ti-6A1-4V, were clamped to the fatigue specimen by a calibrated proving ring. In the experiments the fretting pressure and the fatigue stress amplitude were varied. Specimens in the as-received condition as well as shot-peened specimens were tested to study the effect of surface condition on resistance to fretting. An approximate analysis of the shear transfer process was developed, and predictions are compared with the measured size of the fretting scars. The fatigue results of this investigation are discussed in terms of test variables as well as the predictions of the approximate theoretical treatment.
