Three current environmental concerns - global warming, ozone depletion, and acid rain - are each linked to fossil fuel combustion. Excess carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, although not a pollutant in the traditional sense, promises to alter global weather. Sulfur and nitrogen oxides, transformed into acids, damage crops, trees, and wildlife. And nitrous oxide in the upper atmosphere speeds the destruction of the protective ozone layer. The paper discusses the benefits of natural gas, its impact on the greenhouse effect, air pollutions effect, the thinning ozone shield, and global energy policies.
