Repowering approach to existing power plants provides increased output by combining existing equipment with new components. It also offers the opportunity to use existing major plant components. This paper presents three economical approach concepts to repowering power plants. First is the replacement of a gas or oil-fired boiler with a gas turbine generator and heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) package. The second approach is the compound cycle which consists of a gas turbine and heat exchanger providing feedwater preheating for an existing steam plant. The third application is the fully-fired combined-cycle repowering. The gas turbine exhaust gases are used as preheated air for the steam generator, which can operate with any fuel. 3 figs.
